‘To be leaders in secondary education. Where children thrive as resilient learners, are healthy, happy and successful and where we all believe that being Better Never Stops.’
We are delighted that you have shown an interest in Guildford County School, a proud member of the Athena Schools Trust, and we hope that you find our website informative. It is a privilege to share with you a flavour of what it is like to be part of our school community.
Guildford County School has an established reputation for academic success, developed within a caring, community atmosphere. We are proud of our consistently high examination results and the culture of success that permeates throughout Guildford County School; rated Outstanding by Ofsted in 2017.
At County, we pride ourselves on the fact that every individual is known, valued and recognised for their individual qualities and for the different contributions that they make to our successful school. These qualities are recognised through our well established House system. This system focuses on academic achievement and on co-curricular activities in areas such as Sport, Music, Drama and Public Speaking. We run a challenging programme of performances and competitions throughout the year which inspire both staff and students alike. We want each student to thrive through their participation in this programme and in the supportive and stimulating environment that it provides.
Following our conversion to academy status on 1st January 2013, we have been successful in several bids for capital funds to support our continued growth and development. Our dedicated Art and Photography building was completed in 2014, as were improvements to our Science laboratories and a dedicated Design and Technology suite at the base of our Sixth Form building. In September 2017, in collaboration with the local authority, we expanded our school to take an additional 20 students in each Year Group until 2021. To accommodate this growth, we have successfully completed a three-storey extension incorporating 8 new classrooms, a new staff room, toilets and offices. 2018 / 19 saw the opening of our new Multi-Use Games Area and the reopening of our newly refurbished Library and September 2020 sees the opening of our new Sports Centre. This newest facility offers a Sports Hall, Fitness Room, Dance Studio, PE classroom, office space and physical connection to two of our other main buildings, thus allowing a better flow of people around our site. We hope that these developments will continue to enable us to deliver leading secondary school provision.
County is designated as one of a small number of Specialist Music Colleges; we are a regional centre of excellence and have a firmly embedded culture of participation in Music, the impact of which raises achievement across the whole curriculum. We also work in partnership with local schools and community groups to share our expertise with other practitioners and celebrate the role that Music plays in learning, creativity and life.
We would be pleased to meet you at one of our open events, which are likely to take place virtually this year, but which we hope will still provide an opportunity for you to see our school at work. We are also happy to make individual appointments for prospective parents, students or community partners to visit us and discover what makes our school an exciting place to be and a vibrant place to learn; although please bear with us as we work to allow visitors back to our site amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and associated social distancing requirements.
We look forward to welcoming you to Guildford County School in the near future.
Steve Smith, Head of School.
