Musical Ensembles

We have a wide range of ensembles at Guildford County School, which rehearse during the school week. The ensembles are run by members of the Music department and some of our Mountside Music teachers who take an active role in leadership and direction. GCS Boys Choir – Breaking Barriers

Guildford County is one of the few state schools in the country to house a large established boys choir. This 100 plus strong choir, which is made up of boys from Years 7-11, has recently attracted much media attention, being interviewed by Gareth Malone (LSO Choir Master), filmed by the BBC and featured in articles in the ‘Times’ and ‘Guardian’ newspapers. Howard Goodall (Chief of the National Singing Campaign 2007) has also visited the boys at school.
The choir is now making use of this ‘successful template’ to spread the culture of boys singing. Over the last few years, through an annual tour, they have visited many local primary schools where they have encouraged the younger boys to join forces with them. Their vision is now to open this opportunity to more members of the community.

This excellent role model, provided by these fine ambassadors, is now indeed being supported by a new ‘National Singing Initiative’ which aims to raise the profile of singing in schools.

We are looking to develop the profile of all of our ensembles, so if you can help, whether through sponsorship or any other support you can give please contact us!
