Mountside Music

Mountside Music is a service that provides over 180 instrumental lessons to pupils at Guildford County School every week. All of our teachers are fully qualified musicians with a vast range of musical experience and are CRB checked. We aim to provide a service that promotes creativity and develops the skill and talent of those who take lessons with us. We currently provide lessons for the following instruments:
Piano, Flute, Guitar, Bass, Violin, Saxophone, Clarinet, Voice, Cello, Drums.
Please note that all lessons are now invoiced directly by the teachers. If you have any queries regarding fees, please contact your childs teacher.
Here are profiles of just a few of our Mountside Teachers:
Matthew Southcombe
Instrument: Piano and Cello
Studied at: Sir Joseph Williamsons Mathematical School, Rochester.
University of Surrey, Guildford / Roehampton University London.
Qualifications: BMUS (Hons) 2000, Music Therapy MA (To be completed) June 2008
Musical Interests, (Styles, Genres etc.): From Bach to Bjork, Radiohead to Ravel, Miles Davis to Messiaen.
Matthew is a member of the Woodbridge String Quartet, who have appeared live on radio and Sky One’s ‘Braniac’, The Joe Price Quartet, and the Waterden Piano Trio with fellow mountside tutors – Anne Marie Curran and David Clemet-Smith.
Matthew’s most defining moment in his career so far was the realisation that there is more to music than ones own personal enjoyment and expression. Matthew believes strongly in the ability of Music to unlock and empower people with learning disabilities, Mental Health problems and communication disorders and is currently studying for an MA in Music Therapy.
Jon Quinton
Instrument: Guitar
Studied at: ACM – Guildford
Qualifications: Higher Dip – Performance (Guitar)
Musical Interests (Styles, genres, etc): Jon enjoys many different styles of music and is a fan of great songs! Bands he currently enjoys include – John Mayer, Kings of Leon, Groove Armada and Jane’s Addiction.
Jon currently performs in a band called ‘The Velvet Hearts,’ which performs and eclectic mix of Blues, Funk, Soul and Pop! Take a look at their website for more information,

Jon’s most defining moment in his career so far was the opportunity to go to Detroit to record the first Velvet Hearts album this November. Jon had an amazing time working with such good people in a great studio.
Brian Flack
Instrument: Guitar, Bass and Vocals
Studied at: Cove 2nd School and the Academy of Contemporary Music, Guildford
Qualifications Gained: 7 GCSE’s and a Higher and Lower Diploma in Contemporary Music
Musical Interests: Rock, Pop, Folk, Dance, Indie, Drum n Bass etc…

There have been many defining moments in Brian’s career already including playing at Reading Festival 2006, playing the main stage at Guildfest 2004, supporting Blondie, watching his band perform on TV and Radio and having Music released on itunes.
Elizabeth Aylen
Instrument: Flute
Studied at: University of Surrey, Guildford
Qualifications Gained: BMus (Hons), DipABRSM
Musical Interests: 19th Century Romanticism, (Rachmaninov, Wagner). Early 20th Century (Debussy) and Jazz.
Liz performs as part of the Echo Flute Duo, you can find out about them at

Liz’s most defining musical moments include performing at the Royal Albert Hall, St John’s Smith Square Centre, and the CBSO Centre in Birmingham.
Philip Edwards
Instrument: Clarinet and Saxophone
Studied at: The Royal Academy of Music, University of London Goldsmiths College
Qualifications Gained: MMus,GRSM
Musical Interests: Everything and anything!
Philip works as a freelance musician playing both Clarinet and Saxophone. He is still waiting for his big moment in his Music career!
