Curriculum Plan

Lower School

Lower School has both mixed ability subjects and subjects where the children are taught in sets.  In Design and Technology for all 3 years, the Year Group is split into two halves with four classes per half year to comply with Health and Safety requirements.  Codes for these subjects will be: Year g/c Te 1/2/3/4, e.g.7g/Te1, 8c/Te3, 9g/Te4.  Each year will have one double lesson of games per cycle where all students in that year will participate in a sport.

Year 7

Mixed ability subjects are taught in House Groups in Art, Drama, English, Geography, History, ICT, PE and RE.  Class codes for these subjects will be as follows: Year / House Letter (HLSTWY) / Subject Code e.g. 7H/Dm.  Sets, led by Maths, are created for Maths, Science, Music and French in two half year groups – Guildford the ‘g’ side (HLY) and County the ‘c’ side (SWT).  Children are set in English, Geography and History from January, with the setting led by English.

Years 8 and 9

Mixed ability subjects are taught in Art, Drama, ICT, Pe and Re.  Class codes for these subjects will be as follows: Year / House Letter (HLSTWY) / Subject Code e.g. 8W/Re; 9S/Pe.  Sets are created within two half year groups – Guildford (HLY) and County (SWT) for Year 8 and Guildford (SWT) and County (HLY) for Year 9 in English, Maths, Science, MFL, Music, Geography and History which are coded e.g. 8ga/Eng; 9cb/Ma.

In Year 9, students begin their GCSE Language studies, and so drop from the two languages studied in Year 8, back down to one language in Year 9.  This gives them 3 years to complete their language GCSE, with dual linguists (usually a maximum of around 12 per year) maintaining their second language throughout Year 9 during enrichment sessions that are run by the MFL team.
